Creating inspiring arts projects that support other areas of learning is one of HMDT Music’s particular specialisms: Examples in 2014 included:
Beatboxing – Music and Literacy
A 5 day project with Abbeyfield School in Northampton on a Music and Literacy project in which three groups of Year 7s worked with renowned beat-boxer Shlomo to create and perform their own pieces of work. Sessions included lyric writing to develop literacy skills as well as creative writing, composition and learning beat-boxing skills. It finished with a performance that inspired the whole school!
A Secondary School project commissioned by Creative Education Academies Trust producing 5 half hour Shakespeare plays with 6 Academies in the Midlands to celebrate the Bard’s 450th birthday. Each school chose a focus for how they wanted to present their plays and worked with specialist artists to help develop their work. Some of the expertise was delivered as one-off workshops, such as voice work and text delivered by RSC artist Michael Corbidge and physical theatre with Splendid Productions and Frantic Assembly. Longer residencies included puppeteer Oliver Hymans from the Little Angel Theatre helping create an Ariel puppet, music technology artist Charlie Parker building a musical soundscape and Director Katie Lewis (currently at The National Theatre) directing Macbeth. Linking the projects together, Designer Mark Friend worked with a design team in each school who developed, created and made the props, scenery and costume elements for their plays which were performed over a day long Festival in December 2014.
