Major League Baseball is proud to support HMDT’s Shadowball programme and its aim to get children actively involved in playing baseball while educating them on the history of the sport through music. The sport of baseball has a rich history of breaking down racial barriers, and Major League Baseball believes HMDT’s creative approach in both combating racism and stimulating interest in baseball will be an effective and fun way for the community to become involved in the sport.

Shadowball is a compelling jazz opera by renowned jazz composer and pianist Julian Joseph and author Mike Phillips, which tells the fast-paced story of Negro League baseball players and their jazz compatriots, struggling to achieve their dreams during a time of segregation. Together, these larger than life personalities helped to change America forever. Joseph’s score inspired by the era of Ellington and Armstrong comes up to bat swinging with a lively evening of home runs, hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, which is great fun for all the family!

This special performance is a fundraiser for Hackney Music Development Trust, “deservedly touted as one of the country’s exemplary arts education outfits.” Opera Magazine
