These past few days have changed how I feel about the war.<\/p>\n
All I hear, day and night, are sounds of bombs, shells and guns,<\/p>\n
But worst of all – the screams of death will haunt me forever.<\/p>\n
A few days ago, we went over the top to attack.<\/p>\n
I was deafened by the sound of gunfire, gunfire, gunfire!<\/p>\n
There I was<\/p>\n
My life hanging on a thread.<\/p>\n
My heart was racing.<\/p>\n
I could barely see, barely see.<\/p>\n
My heart was pounding.<\/p>\n
My heart was thumping.<\/p>\n
I peered into the murky distance:<\/p>\n
Lying on the cold hard ground, was a soldier still alive!<\/p>\n
I could not leave him there, all injured and alone.<\/p>\n
I rested by his side, though they might hear him groan.<\/p>\n
Groaning, groaning, groaning, groaning, groan\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n
He was my brother, my fellow comrade.<\/p>\n
I stayed with him all night hoping help would come.<\/p>\n
As a new day dawned<\/p>\n
I heaved him to a shell crater and returned to fight.<\/p>\n
Instead I found two more injured men soldiers.<\/p>\n
Now I knew what I had to do.<\/p>\n
Without hesitation, I carried them with me,<\/p>\n
Desp\u2019rate, desp\u2019rate to somehow reach safety.<\/p>\n
Dearest Mother<\/p>\n
Do you know what the Germans, our enemy did?<\/p>\n
Instead of trying to shoot us, they applauded me on my way.<\/p>\n
I knew I would never forget that moment.<\/p>\n
