Embedding the arts across the curriculum<\/span><\/h3>\n

HMDT Music\u2019s new year-long online TIME CPD programme for primary schools builds technical skills in a range of art forms and introduces new ideas, methodologies and resources to empower teachers to use the arts to enhance the whole curriculum.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Delivered by expert artist educators, it is built on the success of the TIME project delivered to six Lancashire primary schools over the past three years, which enhanced classroom practice, broadened the curriculum, developed teacher and student skills, engaged the in-school and parent community and endorsed the value of arts embedded learning to build confidence and attainment. <\/span><\/h4>\n

The Programme offers 4 x 1.5 hour online after-school sessions per term, which will include theoretical issues and curriculum considerations as well as practical activities.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Looking at the place of art in the Primary Curriculum and progression of Art skills, punctuated by practical activities exploring ways of developing mark making and observation. <\/span><\/p>\n

20 Jan 2022: Painting <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding the basics of colour theory and engaging ways to develop children\u2019s repertoires in using paint. <\/span><\/p>\n

28 April 2022: Sculpture<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

More than just clay! Looking at the range of sculptural approaches achievable in primary schools and how we can incorporate them in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

4 November 2021: The use of games<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This session will explore a wealth of theatre games and tools to build focus, teamwork, collaboration, behaviour, classroom management and stagecraft skills as well as show how each activity can link to thematic learning and narrative. <\/span><\/p>\n

3 February 2022: Building stories through improvisation and character<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This practical and discussion-based session will look at how to use drama to bring learning to life in all subject areas; how to merge fact and fiction to discover and create stories and explore a character profile.\u00a0 <\/span>looking at how they move, walk, talk, think and their motivation. <\/span><\/p>\n

19 May: Devising dialogue, writing scripts and lyrics<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

From story to text: how to find and develop a structure, pick your action points and give your narrative a voice in both a collaborative and individual format. Write a class sonnet as part of the exploration of rhythm and rhyme.<\/span><\/p>\n

25 November: <\/span>Warm-ups<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Explore and gain confidence with a variety of rhythmic and melodic warm-ups, games and exercises designed to engage and develop group focus and lead into literacy and numeracy activities as well as music-making.<\/span><\/p>\n

24 February: Composition: Song-writing and instrumental soundscapes
\n<\/b>With the right tools you don\u2019t need to have formal musical training to help your class write a song to express emotion, celebrate or empathise with an event or propel the action; or to create an instrumental soundscape to illustrate mood or set a scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

9 June: Music with tablets and apps and a look at notation<\/b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Some guidance and advice on music based software for music-making in the class from creating electronic sounds to seeking the right beat, as well as examining effective ways of notating music for children.<\/span><\/p>\n

PUPPETS<\/h2>

Creating different types of puppets and manipulation<\/h4><\/p>\n

10 March: Making and Using Puppets<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This session will cover ideas for making and using different styles and sizes of puppets from individual to whole class large-scale, including rod puppets, simple hand puppets and shadow puppetry, suitable for a range of age groups. It will explore both how to connect puppetry to themes and topics across the curriculum and how puppetry can not only be used within performance but also as tool for literacy, motor skills, speaking and listening and developing confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

23 June: Film making and animation<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This training will give a basic introduction to film-making and the use of animation in the classroom from storyboards, script writing and camera work to editing, using simple and accessible equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

This session with HMDT Music\u2019s Creative Director introduces their methodology of embedding the arts thematically across the whole curriculum which has been honed over twenty years resulting in several award-winning projects. It also gives access to a wealth of new topic-based resources developed through the commission of new performance pieces supported by lesson plans, activities and workshops, aimed at Black History, Remembrance Day, Holocaust Memorial day and Science Week. <\/span><\/p>\n

Stacey Williams has a strong background utilising film and media in documentary and promotional films as well as in youth and community engagement. She is passionate about the use of media to communicate complex ideas and its potential to create social, behavioural, and\/or community change. Formerly Head of Prevention and Education at Cut Films, as founding Director of Attain Productions she has worked with Creative Education Academies Trust, British Safety Council, HMDT Music, MK Gallery, MAC UK, Latin America Foundation for the Future among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben McCabe \u2013 Music <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Creative Producer and Music Leader at More Music, Ben is a drummer, French horn player (with ceilidh band Striding Edge) and singer who plays in numerous bands across genres from rock, folk, jazz, electronica and world music. As well as specialising in Early Years and primary education projects he is also musical director of Off The Rails creative jazz orchestra and leads More Music\u2019s Baybeat Streetband, a vibrant community samba band that has performed at festivals and events across the Northwest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Keith Parkinson \u2013 Art<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Following 24 years as a Teacher and Headteacher in primary and special schools, Keith studied for a BA in Fine Art and has worked as a Freelance Artist and educator for 16 years. His personal practice includes making and exhibiting drawings paintings and sculptures. He runs a diverse range of workshops and residencies in schools and community settings, as well as teaching adult art classes. He also paints murals, particularly in school settings. He has worked on the TIME project for the past three years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laura Halliwell – Puppets<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Laura Halliwell is an artist-educator who has worked in hundreds of education and\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

community settings over the past 20 years.\u00a0She has worked with a wide range of arts organisations including working extensively with the Britain’s best known puppet theatre, Little Angel Theatre on puppetry projects with children and young people aged 2 \u00a0– 18 yrs as well as with adults, community groups and teachers. Laura worked on HMDT Music\u2019s Trench Brothers<\/i> project in London and East Sussex and delivered puppet making workshops as part of their 2021 TIME project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freya Wynn-Jones \u2013 Drama <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Freya Wynn-Jones is a director and opera maker working across a wide range of professional, educational and community settings. With a particular interest in the relationship between theatre and vocal art, Freya works with companies to devise new work and find contemporary meaning in existing repertoire. She delivers CPD training to teachers, artists and facilitators with The Royal Opera House and their Create And Sing program, Mahogany Opera and their Snappy Opera program, Welsh National Opera, Spitalfields Music and more. An ensemble director, Freya finds imaginative new ways to create work with non-professionals through play and fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tertia Sefton-Green \u2013 HMDT Music Creative Director <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Tertia has been creating, developing, fundraising and managing HMDT Music\u2019s award-winning projects for the past 20 years. She has written the libretti for Hear Our Voice<\/i> their international project based on children\u2019s Holocaust writings which was performed in London, Nuremberg and Prague and Trench Brothers<\/i> which commemorated ethnic minority soldiers in the First World War, as well as writing numerous arts-embedded cross curricular resources for HMDT Music\u2019s projects, the Handel House, San Diego Opera and several UK opera companies.<\/span><\/p>\n
