Julian Joseph Jazz Academy – Duke Ellington Autumn Half Term Course

MONDAY 23 OCTOBER – THURSDAY 26 OCTOBER 2023

Artistic Director: Julian Joseph

Course led by: Alex Thomas-French

In partnership with World Heart Beat Music Academy and Trinity Laban, come and join us for a special four-day big band course exploring the music of one of America’s greatest composers – Duke Ellington.

The course will cover:

  • Playing from direct, professional transcriptions taken from the original recordings;
  • Gaining experience playing as part of a large jazz ensemble;
  • Building confidence in reading and interpreting big band charts;
  • Meeting like-minded driven young jazz musicians;
  • Performing in a new, state of the art music venue;
  • Jam sessions at the end of each day (for students looking to audition for a conservatoire this year the jams will also be an opportunity to play and run through audition repertoire);
  • Guest tutors will include Malcolm Earle-Smith and Pete Long.

The four days will culminate with a performance at World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens at 7pm on the last day, Thursday 26th October.

The first three days of the course will take place at 58 Kimber Road, SW18 4PP (1pm – 7pm for all horns and bass players, and 3.45pm – 7pm for all drummers, vocalists, pianists and guitarists)

and the final day will take place at World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens, 3 Ponton Road, SW11 7BD (1pm – 5pm, with a concert at 7:30pm).
There are only places for one full big band (only doubling drums, bass, and piano) so places are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis.

The full four-day course costs £249.00 for all horns and bass players, and £209.00 for all drummers, vocalists, pianists and guitarists.
Price includes one ticket for a friend or family member to attend the performance at Embassy Gardens on Thursday 26th October. Further tickets can be purchased nearer the time via the venue’s website / box office.
Places will not be reserved until payment has been made.

COVID-19 UPDATE: ONLINE LEARNING

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Further to our previous update, we are delighted to announce that we are creating a programme of online learning. This will include one-to-one learning, pre-recording group learning, live group sessions and masterclasses. Our online learning programme will be phased in, starting with some LIVE one-to-one sessions tomorrow Saturday 21 March and some pre-recorded materials for group learning. We will be building on the group learning resources over the coming days, so please bear with us as more will be available next week after they have passed our quality assurance measures!

It is really important that students keep up with their musical journey and distance learning will help them keep motivated to practise and offer continued support of their progress, whilst  keeping in touch with their tutors. Although the first lessons might take a little getting used to, research shows it to be a very valid way of learning. As well as ensuring continued development, it will also be an important means of keeping your children occupied whilst being kept at home! Equally we are exploring lots of exciting and innovative ways of developing group learning and each week new sessions and learning ideas will be put onto our new Online Learning pages.

Our LIVE online learning programme will be available on BlueJeans, a video chat platform. This can easily be used on desktops/laptops and smart devices. BlueJeans allows us to host sessions, whilst maintain the privacy of all using it. Email addresses will NOT be publicly available. If using a smart device you will need to download the FREE BlueJeans AppYou will be invited to online sessions via email, which will contain a link. Clicking the link will open:

Smart Device – the BlueJeans App

Desktops/Laptops – your web browser

If you have a one-to-one instrumental lesson (Green/Blue/Additional/Instrumental Only), you will receive an instrumental time slot shortly for tomorrow Saturday 21 March. We will attempt to keep lesson times the same as far as is possible, however we cannot guarantee this. Please do let us know if you cannot make the slot, or if you would like the session invite to go to an email other than yours (i.e. your child(ren)’s email). These email addresses will be used by office ONLY and will NOT be shared.

Now is also your chance for you or your children to pick up instruments you might have stopped learning. Please contact Sabina about lessons through Music Lessons For You.

We will send links to our new Online Learning pages later today or first thing tomorrow for I Can Sing! and as many of our CYMH groups as we have material ready.

We look forward to sharing our online learning programme with you all as it grows!

Best wishes and Keep healthy
